SAN DIEGO—Associate Justice Judith Haller of the Court of Appeal, Fourth Appellate District, Division One, will retire on Oct. 31 after 28 years on the appellate bench.

Former California Supreme Court Justice John A. Arguelles, a member of the Class of 1954, died at his home on April 10. He was 94.

Arguelles was the first UCLA Law alumnus to serve on the state’s highest court and only the second Hispanic Justice on the court.

Public hearings on May 17 will consider appointments of Justice Maria E. Stratton and Martin N. Buchanan to appellate courts in Los Angeles and San Diego.
