California Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero today issued a statement on the judicial branch budget for 2024-25.

Courts received more than 220 CARE Act petitions since the program launched in October; Judicial Council also hears reports on remote appearances, a new racial justice toolkit, and a program providing free legal services in high-stakes civil cases

Under new leadership, the judicial branch of California continued to prioritize access to justice for court users and the public.

Approves new court rules and forms, will collect implementation data, and provide training and technical assistance for judges and court staff

“This year’s budget represents an unprecedented investment in our judicial branch,” said Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye.

Governor Gavin Newsom signed a budget that includes $1.2 billion in new funding for the judicial branch, including restoring $200 million in previous cuts and making major investments in judicial branch programs improving access to justice.

Council also approves expansion of an online pilot program enabling low-income litigants to request reductions in traffic infraction fines and fees remotely

The budget cuts $200 million from the state court system, though $150 million could be restored if the federal government sends additional aid by the fall.

"We in the judicial branch will do our best to serve the public in these unprecedented times of a global pandemic and recession," Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye said.
