The Constitution requires that “no person” be deprived of life, liberty or property without “due process of law.” Yet, in its words and its actions, the Trump administration has expressed contempt and defiance for this vital constitutional necessity.

(Subscription required) Senior U.S. District Judge Susan Illston's order temporarily halts reductions across 21 agencies, calling the administration's moves likely unlawful. The Justice Department told the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals her ruling "rests on a fundamentally flawed understanding of the separation of powers."

The data shows that most prisoners who were released early steered clear of serious crimes that would land them back in prison. Thirty people returned to prison for first or second-degree murder offenses, representing fewer than 1% of the group.
