Supreme Court Appoints Members to State Bar Trustees Nominating Committee
SAN FRANCISCO—The Supreme Court of California today announced the appointments of four new members and the new chair and vice chair on the committee that assists the court in soliciting and evaluating potential appointees to the State Bar Board of Trustees.
The committee will be chaired by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Holly Fujie, formerly the committee’s vice chair.
Sacramento Superior Court Judge Emily Vasquez has been appointed to serve as a member and vice chair through Feb. 6, 2019, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of Judge David De Alba. Judge Vasquez was appointed to the bench in 2001 having been in private practice. She had previously served as commission counsel for the California Fair Employment and Housing Commission, an appellate attorney for the California Public Employment Relations Board, a Sacramento assistant public defender, and began her legal career as an attorney with California Rural Legal Assistance.
New attorney members appointed to three-year terms beginning Feb. 7, 2018 through Feb. 6, 2021 are:
- Terrance Flanigan is a founder of The Flanigan Firm in Sacramento. He previously served as the appointments secretary to Governors Pete Wilson and George Deukmejian, where he helped both governors appoint California judges and agency and department personnel. He also served as a State Bar trustee from 2014 to 2017.
- Jerrilyn Malana is a chief deputy/special advisor with the San Diego County District Attorney’s office, where she advises on human resources and civil litigation issues. She previously spent 16 years as an employment law attorney with Littler Mendelson.
- Chris Alan Schneider is regional director of the Agricultural Labor Relations Board after serving more than 20 years as executive director of Central California Legal Services.
Attorneys Michael Levy and Bryant Yang will continue their service on the seven-member committee.
The Supreme Court of California created the State Bar Trustees Nominating Committee in 2013 following 2012 legislation that changed the governance of the State Bar of California to include five attorney member trustees appointed by the Supreme Court.
Rule 9.90 describes factors the committee should consider in soliciting, reviewing and recommending potential appointees to the board, as well as the committee’s general operation.
