The following cases are placed upon the calendar of the Supreme Court for remote hearing on June 27, 2023.

The following case summaries are issued to inform the public about cases that the California Supreme Court has scheduled for oral argument and of their general subject matter.  In most instances, the descriptions set out below are reproduced from the original news release issued when review in each of these matters was granted and are provided for the convenience of the public.  The descriptions do not necessarily reflect the view of the court or define the specific issues that will be addressed by the court.  

TUESDAY, JUNE 27, 2023 — 10:00 A.M.  

(1)  Camacho (Ciro) v. Superior Court of Merced County (People, Real Party in Interest), S273391 #22-118  Camacho v. Superior Court, S273391.  (F082798; nonpublished opinion; Merced County Superior Court; 146207.)  Petition for review after the Court of Appeal denied a petition for writ of mandate or prohibition.  This case presents the following issue:  Does a 15-year delay in bringing a defendant to trial under the Sexually Violent Predator Act (Welf. & Inst. Code, § 6600 et. seq) constitute a due process violation?

(2)  Pico Neighborhood Association et al. v. City of Santa Monica, S263972 #20-310  Pico Neighborhood Assn. v. City of Santa Monica, S263972.  (B295935; 51 Cal.App.5th 1002; Los Angeles County Superior Court; BC616804.)  Petition for review after the Court of Appeal reversed the judgment in a civil action.  The court directed the parties to brief the following issue:  What must a plaintiff prove in order to establish vote dilution under the California Voting Rights Act (Elec. Code, §§ 14025-14032)?
