A California appellate court has ordered the Temecula Valley School Board to stop enforcing its ban on Critical Race Theory while a lawsuit works its way through the courts. The suit, filed by a group of teachers, students and teachers’ unions (Mae M. v. Komrosky), alleges that the 2022 ban on critical race theory has impacted student’s’ rights, censored teachers and created a hostile environment.

Amid rising tensions between the Trump administration and the judiciary, some federal judges are beginning to discuss the idea of managing their own armed security force. The notion came up in a series of closed-door meetings in early March, when a group of roughly 50 judges met in Washington for a semiannual meeting of the Judicial Conference, a policymaking body for the federal judiciary.

The courthouse arrests escalate the Trump administration’s efforts to speed up deportations. Migrants who can’t prove they have been in the U.S. for more than two years are eligible to be deported without a judicial hearing. Historically, these expedited removals were done only at the border, but the administration has sought to expand their use.

Fundamentally, our assessment and that of the administration are very similar—the state is likely to face persistent future deficits. These deficits range from $10 billion to $20 billion through 2028-29.
