(Subscription required) California contracts can’t limit damages for intentional wrongdoing, the California Supreme Court ruled Thursday in a case stemming from a $6 million fight over Trader Joe’s barbeque sauce.

(Subscription required) California's Supreme Court justices said they didn't know a bar vendor used artificial intelligence in crafting bar exam questions until they saw the revelation in a press release Monday.

The program offers an incentive to candidates by reimbursing them for their interpreting training expenses and examination fees, covering up to three exams. It also requires participants to agree to a minimum three-year employment period with the courts upon passing their exams and registering with the Judicial Council.

In New England Country Foods, the court agreed in February 2024 to answer this question for the Ninth Circuit, “Is a contractual clause that substantially limits damages for an intentional wrong but does not entirely exempt a party from liability for all possible damages valid under California Civil Code Section 1668?”
