State Supreme Court to review money bail case

(Subscription required) The state Supreme Court has agreed to review an appellate case that has become a significant challenge to the money bail system. The court said Wednesday it would examine the question of what authority judges have in setting bail for pretrial defendants. San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon asked the court to weigh in on In re Humphrey (2018) 19 Cal. App. 5th 1006.

Some blame law schools, students for poor bar results

(Subscription required) Soon after the State Bar announced the success rate on the February bar exam plummeted to a record-low 27.3 percent, some law school deans pointed to the stringent passing standard as a major culprit. But other legal education observers say the schools, not the nation’s second-highest cut score, bear the bulk of the responsibility for the decline in performance.
