Judicial Council adopts new infraction rules

(Subscription required) The Judicial Council on Friday adopted changes to the California Rules of Court that will alter procedures governing failures to appear, failures to pay bail and fines, and ability-to-pay determinations in infraction cases.

The California Supreme Court has agreed to decide whether a Los Angeles Superior Court judge should have held a midtrial competency hearing in the case of a man convicted of stabbing five men, three of them fatally, on Hollywood streets in July and August 2009.

A state judicial commission on Monday declined to punish Aaron Persky, the Santa Clara County Superior Court judge who was widely criticized for the six-month jail sentence he imposed on a former Stanford University student accused of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman.
