Court backs rules to protect fire victims from being underinsured

California’s insurance commissioner has the authority to adopt rules that protect homeowners whose policies fall far short of the amounts needed to rebuild or replace homes destroyed by wildfires or other disasters, the state Supreme Court ruled Monday.

Former Mayor Fujioka sworn in as county judge

In a ceremony that included her family members, California Supreme Court Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf and many other judges, lawyers and elected officials from Alameda County, former Piedmont Mayor Margaret Fujioka was officially sworn in as a judge to the Alameda County Superior Court bench.
