Former Presiding Justice Richard Schauer was the first presiding justice who served on the 2nd District Court of Appeal, Division VII from 1982 to 1984. Prior to joining the Court of Appeal, Justice Schauer served as the supervising judge of the Los Angeles Superior Court’s Criminal Department in 1968 and thereafter became the presiding judge of the court in 1980. He was also the son of Justice B. Rey Schauer of the 2nd District Court of Appeal and California Supreme Court.

Throughout his judicial tenure, Justice Schauer presided over several high profile cases, including a law suit filed against the University of California Board of Regents by Angela Davis over her dismissal as a professor because of her affiliation with the Communist Party and a 1967 case involving former Los Angeles City Harbor Commission members who were accused of alleged irregularities in their award of a multi-million contract.

Justice Schauer was an alumnus of Occidental College and the University of California at Los Angeles. He passed away on May 10, 2017 and is survived by his wife of 54 years, Loretta Choy Schauer and two daughters, Kimberly Schauer DiGionanni and Stacey Schauer Donlan.
