Sacramento—Administrative Presiding Justice Vance W. Raye announced that as part of its award-winning community outreach program, the Court of Appeal, Third Appellate District, will hear oral argument at Roseville High School in the Roseville Joint Union High School District beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 30, 2015.

Since 2000, the Third Appellate District has held oral argument sessions in 24 high schools in 20 counties, and this will be the first time that a Court of Appeal session will be held in the southern part of Placer County.

Roseville District officials have arranged for students from five of its high schools to attend—a total of nearly 1,000 students. The sessions will be heard in the Patti Baker Performing Arts Theater, One Tiger Way, Roseville. All interested members of the public, attorneys, and judges are welcome to attend. Those who attend will be required to go through security screening, so an early arrival is advisable. The following four cases will be heard:

Morning Session 8:30 - 10:30 a.m.

8:30 - 9:00 a.m.: California Clean Energy Committee v. County of PlacerC072680. Appeal is taken from judgment denying appellant’s petition for a writ of mandate, brought pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act, seeking to vacate the County’s certification of an Environmental Impact Report and approval of a project for expansion of the Homewood Mountain Resort located on the west shore of Lake Tahoe.

9:00 - 9:30 a.m.: The People v. PerrymanC075570. Appeal is taken from judgment entered upon jury verdict convicting defendant of arson of an inhabited structure.

9:30 - 10:30 a.m.: Discussion/question and answer session with students.

Afternoon Session 12:00 - 2:00 p.m.

12:00 - 12:30 p.m.: The People v. VillasenorC071432: Appeal is taken from judgment entered upon two jury verdicts convicting defendant, in two separate instances, of attempted murder and shooting at an occupied vehicle, and of attempted murder and shooting from a vehicle.

12:30 - 1:00 p.m.: Cantrell v. Sutter North Medical GroupC075443: Appeal is taken from judgment for defendants on medical malpractice claims.

1:00 - 2:00 p.m.: Discussion/question and answer session with students.

As part of this educational experience, justices of the Third Appellate District will discuss their career paths with the students and conduct a question and answer period immediately following each session of oral argument. The justices are not permitted to answer questions about the cases.

Twenty-seven local attorneys have volunteered their time to visit classrooms at each of the high schools in the Roseville Joint Union High School District before the day of oral argument. They will make presentations about the California court system and the appellate process, and discuss the cases the students will see during the oral argument at Roseville High School.

The Court of Appeal ordinarily holds oral argument in its courtroom at 914 Capitol Mall, Sacramento. The Third Appellate District comprises 23 counties: Alpine, Amador, Butte, Calaveras, Colusa, El Dorado, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Mono, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity, Yolo, and Yuba.
