Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye appointed seven judicial officers to the Power of Democracy Steering Committee, the governing body of her Civic Learning Initiative.
The new members represent a growing focus by the judiciary to promote civic outreach:
Judge Carolyn M. Caietti
Judge Caietti is the presiding judge of the Juvenile Court in San Diego County. She is co-chair of the San Diego Civic Learning Partnership and a leader in the Keeping Kids in School and Out of Court Initiative.
Judge Consuelo María "Connie" Callahan
Judge Callahan serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. She is a frequent instructor to judges and lawyers, both domestically and internationally.
Judge Raymond Fisher
Judge Fisher is a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He is a member of the Judicial Branch Committee of the United States Judicial Conference and was co-chair of its Civic Engagement Subcommittee.
Justice Andrea Lynn Hoch
Justice Hoch serves on the California Court of Appeal, Third Appellate District. She is a member of the Appellate Practice Curriculum Committee for the Judicial Council’s Center for Judicial Education and Research (CJER).
Judge Kristen Lucena
Judge Lucena is a superior court judge with the Butte County Superior Court. She co-chairs the Butte County Civic Learning Partnership, which was recently awarded the Exemplary Leadership and Service Award by the Chief Justice.
Judge Kimberly J. Mueller
Judge Mueller is a U.S. District judge in the Sacramento Division of the Eastern District of California. She was active in founding and developing The Justice Anthony M. Kennedy Library and Learning Center.
Judge David Wesley
Judge Wesley is a superior court judge with the Los Angeles Superior Court. He serves as director of Los Angeles County Teen Courts and as president of the California Association of Youth Courts (CAYC).
The Chief Justice and the Power of Democracy Steering Committee have opened doors to civic learning in our schools, and we are focused on bringing engaging lessons about the rule of law and our courts through those doors.
