Court of Appeal, Third Appellate District, to Hear Oral Argument at Las Plumas High School

SACRAMENTO—Administrative Presiding Justice Vance W. Raye announced that as part of its award-winning community outreach program, the Court of Appeal, Third Appellate District, will hear oral argument at Las Plumas High School in the Oroville Union High School District beginning at 8:56 a.m. on Wednesday, April 25.

Since 2000, the Third Appellate District has held oral argument sessions in 30 high schools and one law school in 20 counties of its district.

Principal Dan Ramos has arranged for 300 students from Las Plumas High School to attend. Oral argument will be heard in the gymnasium of the high school at 2380 Las Plumas Ave., Oroville. All interested members of the public, attorneys, and judges are welcome to attend. Those who attend will be required to go through security screening, so an early arrival is advisable. The following two cases will be heard:

  • 8:56 - 9:26 a.m.: Alliance for California Business v. State Air Resources Board & Jack Cody v. State Air Resources Board et al., C082828 & C083083. In these two appeals, which have been consolidated for oral argument and disposition, appeal is taken from judgments entered upon granting of motions for judgment on the pleadings. In each case, the trial court found that an evaluation of the pleadings established that appellants could not maintain a challenge to a California state regulation.
  • 9:26 - 9:56 a.m.: The People of the State of California v. Adam Teifer Jacob, C076124. Appeal is taken from judgment entered upon jury trial conviction for first degree murder with use of a deadly weapon.
  • 10:00 - 10:42 a.m.: Discussion/question-and-answer session with students.


As part of this educational experience, justices of the Third Appellate District will discuss their career paths with the students and conduct a question-and-answer session immediately following oral argument. The justices are not permitted to answer questions about the cases. Nine attorneys and several local judges have volunteered their time to visit classrooms at Las Plumas High School before the day of oral argument. They will make presentations about the California court system and the appellate process, and discuss the cases the students will see during the oral argument at the high school.

The Court of Appeal ordinarily holds oral argument in its courtroom at 914 Capitol Mall, Sacramento. The Third Appellate District comprises 23 counties: Alpine, Amador, Butte, Calaveras, Colusa, El Dorado, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Mono, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity, Yolo, and Yuba.

Relevance
